Director Shirsha Guha Provides Expert Commentary at IIT-Karagpur Workshop
Contribution appears in The Telegraph Calcutta newspaper
KOLKATA, INDIA — On Saturday, August 8, DPP Director Shirsha Guha attended a workshop on improving the quality of life for elderly people at the Salt Lake campus of IIT-Kharagpur. The workshop is part of a study on enhancing the well-being of the elderly in residential neighborhoods.
Recent insight and research into this demographic shows “About 15 percent (of India’s 100 million senior citizens) live alone or with their spouse in Bengal,” said Guha.
Senior citizens and other concerned members of the community voiced their needs calling for better transportation services, well-equipped ambulance services, and affordable private healthcare. Even more, a survey conducted among 150 persons aged 55 to 80 revealed wishes for new libraries, parks with accessible paths, and centers for home collection blood samples.
IIT-Kharagpur will voice these recommendations at the conclusion of the study in hopes of bringing change throughout community facilities.
