Contribution appears in news outlet’s ‘Ei Samay’ Bengali newspaper

DPP Director Shirsha Guha Times of India Newspaper

KOLKATA, INDIA — On Sunday, July 26, DPP Director Shirsha Guha was featured as a contributing author in Times of India‘s Bengali newspaper, Ei Samay. The story, entitled “This Lonely Room is Their Refuge,” is an amalgam of several experts’ viewpoints on the plight of the aged population in Kolkata.

Guha’s exposition begins with senior citizens struggling to manage household and outside errands, health and mental health problems and much more; 1 in 5 Indian seniors suffer from depression, a disproportionately high number compared to the rest of the world. Isolation from the joint family system after major events–such as younger members entering the working world–is one of the many factors responsible for this population’s daily uphill battle.

Insofar as searching for the foundation for a long-term solution, Guha writes: “In the years to come, private sector initiatives that deliver services to the elderly will have to play a leading role. These organizations can work in conjunction with NGOs, the police initiatives, as well as government programs, and bring the much needed accountability, security, professionalism and quality to the industry. It’s not one instead of the other but they must all work in conjunction to address all of the problems that the elderly face today.”
