Women`s Legal Aid Cell Guwahati Assam
Under the National Legal Services Authority (NLSA), the State has the Assam State Legal Services Authority (ASLSA), which has a well-developed network of 33 District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) in as many districts of the state. Apart from this, ASLSA has two taluks at sub-division level – one in Rangia and one in Pathsala – and the Gauhati High Court Legal Services Committee (GHCLSC). Apart from these, ASLSA also has 1,015 volunteers. Under section 12 of the Legal Services Authority Act 1987, the State Legal Services Authority may provide legal services free of charge to any person itself and through its DLSAs, taluks and the HC Legal Services Committee. The Legal Services Committee of the Gauhati High Court alone has up to 87 lawyers and ASLSA as a whole has 1,001 solicited lawyers, said Satya Nath Sarma, member and secretary of ASLSA. According to Sarma, anyone applying for free legal aid in the Gauhati High Court must go through the GHCLSC. “The needy person may apply for this benefit either by way of application or immediately at the time of the hearing before the court. We are also in the process of publicizing our free legal aid,” he said. The institution has established a permanent legal aid cell, established under the rules of the BCI, to support disadvantaged and rural communities in their efforts to achieve justice for all. The Legal Aid Unit of the institution, in cooperation with the Dibrugarh District Legal Services Authority, jointly and independently organized various awareness-raising programmes such as legal assistance camps, legal literacy programmes, human rights awareness programmes, Lok Adalat visits, workshops, etc., jointly and independently to address legal issues in their legal activities.
from time to time. The cell is a way to expose students to understand the nature of cases and types of colonization. The Legal Aid Cell is made up of volunteer paralegals (law students) who are committed to engagement, awareness, and outreach to ordinary people under the supervision of a coordinator and three other college faculty members. Paralegal volunteers occasionally participated in various training programmes organized by the Dibrugarh District Legal Service Authority.
